Segment 1
You must be at least 14 years and 8 months old before the first day of class.
A Segment 1 course consists of:
- 24 hours of classroom instruction
- 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction
- 4 hours of in-car observation
Class is 2 1/2 to 3 weeks long. We add hands-on activities and guest speakers to keep things interesting. Our students always love the question-and-answer time with local policemen and firefighters. On the first day of class, we meet with parents/guardians to discuss the responsibilities of having a new teen driver in the household. Pertinent information is distributed, and the procedure for getting their teen a Michigan driver's license is discussed. On the last day, students are given an exam and must get 70 percent or better on the exam to finish the course.
Driving lessons are scheduled within the first three days of the class. Lessons are outside the regularly scheduled class time. By state law, we have up to three weeks after the last day of class to finish driving with our students. The scheduling for the drive times tends to be very flexible and is offered frequently; however, restrictions apply. Please refer to the Segment One Contract or our offices for more information.
For students under 18 years of age, this is the first step taken to obtain their license. Students must also take a Segment 2 course and a road test to get their license.
After completing Segment 1, the student must visit the secretary state to obtain a Level 1 Learner's License before they can drive with a licensed parent or guardian. Students CANNOT drive with their course certificate of completion. Students will receive their certificate of completion after their last driving lesson from their driving instructor as long as all other course requirements have been met.
A $200 deposit is required to register. The remaining balance is due by the start of the first class. Students with an outstanding balance will not be able to schedule driving lessons. If the student still has a remaining balance by the second week of the course, they will be automatically dropped from the course.
Each session requires a minimum of 4 students to be held. If the minimum enrollment is not met, students will be moved to the next abvailable session.
**Please be advised that foreign exchange students can only take this class for learning purposes. They will not receive a Michigan permit or a refund.
